Also called Spotted St. John's Wort
Features: The 5-petaled yellow flowers of this perennial St. John's Wort bloom for about a month in midsummer. The clustered flowers have tiny spots on the petals and buds. St. John's Wort flowers have abundant pollen and are a bee magnet, but do not make nectar. These plants prefer sun to part sun and are found in prairies, open woodlands, woodland edges and savannas. The plant is mildly toxic to mammals and should be a good deer and rabbit resistant option.
The common name of plants in the St. John's-Wort family comes from the bloom time near the summer solstice when the feast day of St. John was celebrated in medieval Europe. There are several species that are small woody shrubs but this one is herbaceous, and dies back and regrows each year.
