Also called Wood's Sedge and named after Dr. William Wood, one of its discoverers. (not to be confused with Carex blanda, Common Wood Sedge). Newly commercially available.
Features: This short, grasslike sedge has fine foliage that is blueish in spring then becomes green, with a trace of red at the base. It grows well in a woodland setting and can be a groundcover in partly shady areas. It will also tolerate some sun and was determined by a Mt. Cuba Center study to be a promising lawn substitute, growing more densely than Carex pensylvanica, which is fairly similar. Produces small fluffy yellow seed heads in spring.
Light: Partial Sun to shade; will tolerate full sun with enough moisture
Soil: Medium Dry to Medium Moist
Height: 0.5-1 foot
Blooms: May
