Wild Ones West Cook
Chokecherry - Prunus virginiana
Chokecherry - Prunus virginiana
Out of stock
Features: This is in the cherry family, but its fruits are smaller and less sweet than many, as its name implies. Critters don't mind though. The nectar and pollen of this shrub attract bees, butterflies, moths, and beneficial insects. Squirrels, chipmunks and birds enjoy the sour/bitter fruit with seeds.
Native Americans used to treat colds, fevers and stomach ailments with these antioxidant-laden berries. Today, they can be transformed into a palatable jam, jelly, syrup or even wine.
