It is not a grass at all, but a small member of the Iris family. Its flowers rise from clumps of long, narrow leaves and can range from white to pale with small yellow centers (or eyes). They attract bees and ants by providing nectar and pollen in May and June at a time before many prairie flowers begin to bloom. It has a fibrous root system and spreads by seeds.
